Insidious by ThatSummersGuy Insidious by ThatSummersGuy
Edit Made the semis, yaaaayy!!! A huge THANK YOU to everyone for the faves & watches. You don't know how much I appreciate them :D

Here's my entry for the Insidious contest. An everyday activity turned sinister. I love cereal. I'm mortally f**king terrified of spiders. Seemed like a good mix. I seriously gave myself the heebie-jeebies while drawing this. After these last two contest pieces, I need to draw something happy and cheerful haha :P

Edit: Tightened up a couple of things, put some perspective on the "film grain" and tried to further define my warm vs. cool tones. Please let me know if it's coming out too dark or anything!

No! How could you? Poor girl is about to get spider'ed.
Meh. Probably her fault anyway. How could she not hear the unholy noise so much chitinous spiders are bound to do?
I still hate you for drawing this though...  ;-)

Truly creepy - her happy carefree smile while danger lurks above - eeee! Also, nice touches with the moles on her arm - makes her seem that much more "real".

Thank you! The comment is much appreciated :D I thought about trying to render this out all realistically, but my last few pics I've really been enjoying toying with an Adam Hughes/Frank Cho style of using the linework to try and keep it a little more graphical in nature. It's been a lot of fun so far!

Hahah!! Biggest one I ever saw personally was down in Costa Rica. I think they called it a Goliath spider or something, but it was about the size of a 33 1/3 record. I only vaguely recall leaving the tour and running out of the rain forest. Thanks a lot for the compliment!!!

dang. That's ginormous! I saw a bird eating spider (or at least thats what I think it was) once when I was traveling abroad, that was pretty huge also. Anyways, good luck on the contest, congrats on making the semi-finals!

Thank you!!! LOL, they're bad around my new home...I'm constantly walking through these ENORMOUS orb spider webs on my back deck. I know they're harmless, but it's pretty hard for me not to take a blowtorch to the place some nights.

Yeah... spiders sure do love porches and decks =P

We have a whole variety where I live, including some that are rather large and love to take up residence in wonderful places like the toilet... DANG! That's what I should have drawn!!! :D

Well, actually you could be right... BUT there has to be a reason why producers take spiders into their films, so arachnophobia might have been there first. And that fear could be a leaving of our ancestors who had to fight against any kind of poisonous and dangerous animals :D
However, I like your theory better.
Greetings

Picking nits on an awesome piece (really, this is great!) - "Film Grain" is a 2D effect, which should be applied without perspective, as it is an artifact of taking a photograph. Same goes for lens flare. Dust in the scene on the other hand, should be rendered with perspective, etc. Love the cereal box - Battlestar O's for the colonial in you!

Thank you!!! I guess "film grain" was more of a misstatement. Normally if I want to add a little grain I do it in a more traditional manner. I think what I was trying to say was "texture overlay." I put a rock texture on there to get rid of some of that digital slickness that I always wind up with, and it wound up looking a little goofy. Threw a perspective adjust on it to make it integrate a little more seamlessly with the walls and cabinets.

That's an excellent point, however! Thanks a lot for the compliment and the comment!
