Just for the hell of it, I worked up a tall version of this pic. There were some elements that got cut off in the square version that I wasn't entirely happy with, so at least with this I've got two options. I think overall I'm happiest with this one.Original Entry Text:
My entry for the Dark Shadows contest. I redrew the head on this three times over the last few days because I couldn't get the feeling down. Or the skill quotient that I felt it needed. The first two were pretty darn atrocious
I'm apparently not too good at mixing 4-5 different ref pix into a coherent portrait. One thing I DID find, however, was a ROCKIN' brush for tone blending. Helped out tremendously on the last attempt at the face.
Since the film is set in the 70's I thought I'd make ol' Barnabas a little more dapper, so I went with a Godfather-style pinstripe suit. Kept his signature necklace though. That thing is awesome. I wanted more of a menacing, yet amused, vibe for his face. Ref was from a screencap of the trailer, I think right after he dodges the disco ball. Went for the Burton-esque trees as well.Edit: 4/24
, Couldn't stand it. I went back and tried to clean this one up a bit, polish it up a little more and put a hair more color into it. I think I'll remove the square version from the contest, although I'll leave it in my gallery. Good luck to all the other contestants, there's some REALLY good pieces in this contest, as usual!
